Food Insecurity Community Service

The Food Insecurity volunteer group has coordinated with Roadrunner Food Bank and the Ronald McDonald House to plan volunteer opportunities for our school to help sort, package, and cook food so it can reach those in need. So far our school has had three volunteer dates with Roadrunner where any interested student could sign up to help. We are looking ahead in March to a week-long event where ALL students in our whole school will volunteer, totalling up to about 360 volunteer hours in just that one week.

Student Testimonials

"It was cool to go and help out with packaging the macaroni. Once I knew what I was doing I got into a groove and was in it the entire time."

Composting/Gardening Community Service

The Composting/Gardening service group engages its students in building strong community bonds within the school, work with organizations outside of the school, improve our campus, learning composting and gardening techniques, and project management skills.

Currently this group is working on planning on a redesign of the garden spaces to help brighten the schools outward appearance and working on spaces for creating & managing compost gathered from inside the school and outside donations.

Food Redistribution Community Service

The Food Redistribution Service group encourages its students to communicate with the student body, organize research, and plan food drives all with the intent to reduce food waste and food insecurity.

The main contribution that this organization is assembling is curating share tables (a way of giving food that people do not want, to people who want or need them). This group is also investigating current laws in New Mexico to find what is allowed and restricted in composting, donating and sharing food. They will be discussing with Senators in the legislature who spoke about free breakfast and lunch at schools while possibly advocating for the cause to Albuquerque Public Schools if needed. â€‹

Unhoused Teens

Community Service

The Unhoused Community Service group pushes its students to contact, organize with, and contribute to outside organizations and non profit companies to donate and support their causes.

They are currently working with McKinney Vento to arrange a clothing drive directed at teenagers who are unhoused (a demographic often ignored). They will be a part of a showcase with the organization in April to see exactly what McKinney Vento needs. Once completed Nex + Gen Students will begin to spark promotional material to spread awareness to their cause.
