STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Food For Thought Doesn't End Here!
Facilitated by Mr. Ryan Schlee Art I & Art II Teacher
As a result of our Student Government starting this Food For Thought Project, one of our teachers came up with the idea of starting a brand new elective for our school to extend the goals of the project into future years! Students will earn a Service Learning credit for continuing to work on the project! Check out the course description below!

"Seeds, Roots, and Shoots, Cultivating Community" is an interdisciplinary high school course blending environmental science, social studies, and community building. Through hands-on gardening, scientific exploration, and group projects, students will learn about plant growth while building collaboration, empathy, and responsibility in local and global contexts.

The course focuses on plant biology, ecology, and environmental science. Students will engage in gardening projects to study plant growth, including germination, photosynthesis, and pollination, while observing how different species interact. They’ll explore how environmental factors like soil, water, and light affect plant development, drawing parallels to how communities thrive when nurtured with care.

In addition to science, students will enhance their interpersonal skills through group projects focused on collaborative leadership and conflict resolution. They will apply their knowledge in service-learning activities, such as creating community gardens or organizing sustainability initiatives.

By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of plant biology and environmental stewardship, along with a commitment to building inclusive, supportive communities. "Seeds, Roots, and Shoots" fosters environmentally conscious, socially responsible individuals who understand the power of collaboration and growth.
